Aligning your supply chain with your corporate strategy isn't easy. It takes time, effort, and commitment from everyone involved—the right people and appropriate timing. But it's worth it! If done right, your company will see improved performance and lower costs.

Learn three key steps you can take to align critical supply chain activities with corporate strategy:

Step 1 - Know Where You Are and Where You Want To Go

It's critical that you understand your current state and identify gaps between where you are and where you want to be. You should define the desired state for your supply chain, which could include a clear understanding of:

  • The business objectives related to cost reduction, quality improvement, or increased customer satisfaction.
  • How each activity contributes toward achieving those objectives
  • How you measure and monitor performance.
  • The roles, responsibilities, and accountabilities of each stakeholder.

In addition, evaluate your organization's standing with the set of questions outlined below. Don't fret if it's a bit off the mark. The whole process is iterative. Therefore, you can always work on improving.

  • What is the level of engagement of your upstream suppliers in product and service design? Think Design for Six Sigma, Design for Logistics, and the like. Ideally, product and design involve suppliers. As a result, you are guaranteed top quality, sustainability, and market relevance.
  • To what extent does your organization share advanced financial information with trading partners? The best scenario is when all partners share appropriate financial information freely, seamlessly, and in an environment built on trust.
  • How integrated is IT across your supply chain and organization? It's not just about having Supply Chain Management Systems or CRM. Instead, you need to determine whether they are linked. Ultimately, the goal is to provide a single source of truth/ data.

As a result, pertinent information is shared seamlessly among all stakeholders, and the ideal standard is reached.

After answering these three questions honestly, you will be able to determine where your organization stands. In turn, you have completed a crucial step in aligning critical supply chain activities with corporate strategy.

Step 2 - Develop a Custom Plan That Addresses Gaps

This plan should include a review of your current processes and procedures, as well as estimates for any necessary changes. In addition, you must consider the impact of any gaps on your customers and employees.

Once you have developed a plan, it is essential to implement it smoothly and evaluate its efficacy regularly.

Step 3 - Enlist Supply Chain Partners To Help You Along the Way

Aligning critical supply chain activities with corporate strategy involves numerous moving parts. Without partners, the task is insurmountable, to put it mildly. To do this effectively, you must:

  • Find the right partners. This involves establishing a partnership with an industry-specific organization, hiring consultants, or working directly with your customers and suppliers on specific projects. If possible, find multiple organizations that are aligned with your goals and objectives. As a result, they can work together as a team toward achieving your mission. However, don't forget about internal stakeholders! They, too, have something valuable to contribute toward achieving those goals.
  • Create a feedback loop between customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders. Engage all three groups in identifying challenges, brainstorming solutions, and implementing them. As a result, you will help ensure that the final product meets your goals while also providing an opportunity for all parties involved to receive recognition for their contribution.

Align Your Supply Chain

Supply chains are critical to the success of any business. Everything must be delivered on time and at a cost that meets or exceeds expectations. And by "everything," we mean from raw materials to customer delivery. That is a daunting task. However, it must be a main focus. Otherwise, an organization can not maintain its competitive edge.
